Our take

Modular building seems to be the new frontier of the construction industry, with promises of roughly halving both construction time and embodied carbon. Assembly OSM is one of the startups scrapping for dominance in this space, with its unique ‘post-modular’ building.

Modular building means that the majority of construction takes place off-site in a controlled factory environment before being transported to where the building will be. Where Assembly OSM marks itself out from competitors is that it actually outsources a lot of manufacturing to its diverse supply chain, and assembles these large physical units (rather than just components) on its patented metal framework. It’s inspired by the manufacturing process of cars and planes more than previously housing construction methods.

Assembly OSM operates within a very busy new market, but the market is growing because there is such a huge desire to address housing shortages and the carbon footprint of construction. And within the market, its ‘post-modular’ model is unique and has attracted high-level support.
