Our take
Calm partners with international music and entertainment giants to create a web app dedicated to helping users achieve healthy sleep, relaxation and meditative practices. With over 100 million downloads, the company is firmly established as the world leader in the digital wellness landscape.
Born in 2012 following a chance meeting on a boat, co-founders Alex Tew and Michael Acton Smith bring a robust entrepreneurial skill set to the table. Having both achieved early successes and mental stresses with previous ventures ‘Million Dollar Homepage’ and ‘Moshi Monsters’ respectively, they set out to make online mindfulness available to the mobile generation.
Since hitting unicorn status in 2019 with $88m in Series B funding, Calm has gone from strength-to-strength in a fiercely competitive market. According to analysis service Sensor Tower, over 5,000 meditation apps have been launched since 2015. Calm is banking on innovative partnerships with UMG (the world's largest music company), HBO Max and additions of stars like Stephen Fry, Sam Smith and Matthew McConaughey to keep them firmly in their number 1 spot.
