Our take

Founded in 2015 with the purpose of making decision-making more equitable, CitizenLab offers a platform used by local governments to enable them to engage people online and make informed decisions.

What was three clients in 2016 is now numbered at around 400 with the company working with hundreds of local governments and organisations across 18 countries. Recent global events have meant that the government plays an even larger role in people’s lives, hence more citizens are willing to engage in policy-making, creating more demand for its service.

To adapt to the evolving landscape, CitizenLab has embraced change by adopting an open-source approach, thereby lowering the barriers to participation and enhancing transparency. In line with its commitment to facilitating public engagement, CitizenLab has also forged a strategic partnership with Konveio. This collaboration aims to streamline the accessibility and interaction with public documents, including feedback-gathering exercises, and promoting transparency in decision-making processes.

Company values

  • We believe that profit serves purpose: We are driven by growth and impact. We take our impact goals seriously and strive to create truly participatory democracies through our work
  • We think bold and move
at the speed of light: To solve the complex challenge of digital democracy, we must dare to think beyond what is expected. We know our success relies on how fast we can adapt and that means challenging ourselves to try new things
  • We favour autonomy and take ownership: We don't rely on heavy bureaucracy. Instead, we have a three-word policy: use good judgement. We give continuous insight into where we are going, not micro-directions on how to get there
  • We are vulnerable and
generate trust through transparency: We also know that transparency is about being open, not about making decisions by consensus. Everybody has a voice, but not everybody always has a vote. We are raw, open, vulnerable, no-bullshit, and get straight to the point
