Our take

Founded in 2015, Classlist responds to the challenges parents face when organising and socialising with other parents at school. Funded by advertising, the free app is an accessible tool to communicate with other parents in their child’s classes. Packed with features that relieve the pressures of modern life for parents, from tracing lost property, selling unwanted uniform and organising events.

There is a noted “Whatsapp problem” amongst existing parent groups. At the National Association of Head Teachers conference school leaders raised concerns over “continued online abuse” from parents, while a survey of teachers in February by the insurance firm Ecclesiastical found more than a third of those contacted by parents on social media had received criticism or abuse. Classlist has set strict guidelines to limit negativity in its forums.

Beyond communication, Classlist offers fundraising opportunities which mutually benefits parents and schools, via their simple revenue-earning and sponsorship features. This is transformative for PTAs, helping to take their fundraising to another level. It also responds to the government’s bid to use technology to reduce teacher workload.

Classlist has a full-time team based in Oxford, UK, alongside a network of Classlist Ambassadors around the world who are experts in managing and developing active and successful online communities. Classlist now works with 350,000 parents in over 25 countries, including the US, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Classlist has tapped into a global parent-problem, and looks to maintain its place as the UK’s number one school parent community app.
