With more than 500 video game developers founded between 2020 and 2021 in the UK, the market has considerably expanded in recent years for British video game makers. Climax Studios, based in Portsmouth, is not one of these companies, having been founded back in 1988. Its acquisition by the American developer Keyword Studios in 2021 though, exemplifies how larger companies from overseas are shining a light on the burgeoning British market.
As a VR and AR developer, Climax Studios has been a major player in British video game development for more than three decades, with client publishers including Microsoft, 2K, and EA. Its 2021 acquisition was worth more than $40 million and has helped Climax expand its team and buffer it against the smaller companies growing out of the UK.
Climax Studio’s focus on next-gen consoles and technology is most likely one of the key reasons for its acquisition. With 2022 seeing them focus on AA and AAA standard games, Climax is well equipped to keep afloat amidst the revitalised British developer market.
