Our take
Fortress is looking to provide a one-stop-shop app for protecting and insuring smartphones. Along with phone insurance, users of the Fortress app benefit from tracking and locating features, cybersecurity protections, backups, and anti-theft capabilities, each available on different membership tiers.
The phone insurance aspect is useful, and a popular tack for many startups to take, but it’s these additional features that elevate Fortress into a provider of something comprehensive and truly unique. Apps from Cerberus and McAfee cover anti-theft and antivirus needs, but it’s unusual to find a single app that covers all these areas.
The 2016-founded Fortress is still at a relatively modest period in its development. It’s available only in a restricted, and unlisted, number of US states, and customer figures, reviews, and product updates aren't available online.
The insurance market is becoming hugely crowded with disruptive startups, and is now giving rise to some major unicorns - so if Fortress is to make waves in the sector it may have to push up its exposure.
