Our take
Liquidity is a persistent problem for investors in early-stage startups, with angel investing being essentially an all-or-nothing bet that far exceeds the appetites of more cautious investors. Funderbeam provides a fundraising and equity trading platform which allows startups to find investors globally and for investors and small funds to freely trade equity shares in the startups they are backing.
While this kind of venture capital is still a high-risk proposition, Funderbeam makes it more approachable by making it easier to trade in response to market signals and to diversify portfolios. Its regulatory approval in the UK, EEA, and Singapore also greatly reduces the need for legal advisors when trading in its marketplace. Funderbeam has been used to raise capital by a large community of startups and growth companies including the likes of Ampler Bikes, Helmes, and Silen.
The company was recently acquired by Venturewave, an Irish venture private equity firm. Funderbeam will use the capital from this deal and the global reach of its parent company to scale its operations, with geographical expansion to the United States a top priority. In the longer term Funderbeam aims to develop into a crucial part of a trading service covering a startup’s entire investment cycle, from the earliest funding rounds to the pre-IPO stage.
