Our take

Fast-moving companies face a challenge to find and recruit top talent in a streamlined way to support their rapid expansion plans. Most of the best people are already in a job, and those who aren't, are not available for long.

Gem is an operating system built for modern-day recruiting. Rather than relying on spreadsheets, Gem's software empowers hiring managers and recruiters to manage and nurture relationships with top talent, by automating tasks, simplifying workflows and offering analytics for forecasting hires.

The idea for Gem was born when co-founders Steve Bartel and Nick Bushak were working as engineering managers at Dropbox and Facebook. They observed the challenges the companies faced with recruitment as they scaled.

Gem plans to continue expanding its product to help companies build relationships with candidates over time. They consider themselves different to LinkedIn, which is more of a public database for candidates and Workday, which is geared towards employees once they have been recruited. Over 300 customers such as Dropbox, Slack and Pinterest use their software.
