Hectare

Since joining Hectare who previously had no design team, I've been given the freedom to help define the team, tools and design process in order to achieve our product roadmap.

There's a huge amount of talent across the Hectare team who are not only highly skilled in what they do but also bring huge amounts on industry knowledge giving amazing context to help with problem solving on product features.

The mission across the company is clear and motivating, which is really refreshing. Helping an industry which is one of the last to be digitised was a big factor in wanting to join the team. Creating digital products to replace manual processes is an exciting challenge.

The company is at a scale up stage where there is still a lot of greenfield development and plenty to get stuck into. There is a lot of autonomy and the chance to take on responsibilities and ownership of different parts of the system. There are not a lot of divides and specialist roles in the development team therefore allowing you to work on anything and get a broader experience of the software development lifecycle. From working on complex business problems, to improving our architecture and infrastructure to even machine learning capabilities - there's plenty to get stuck into.

Hectare truly care about their employees. As developers we are all remote - we occasionally meet up for in-person sessions, and when we do the company take of our travel arrangements. The company wide events are amazing and the best i've encountered and it's clear the company goes above and beyond for it's employees. Beyond that, the management and company are all aligned on the same mission.

Agriculture is an industry very much still untouched by technology. This provides exciting new challenges and a chance to shape the industry. The company has deep roots in the agriculture business, and as a result we get to see up close the pain-points that exist in the industry and how our software will impact it.

Working on an innovative product - which has the potential to be transformative to an entire industry - is always going to be an interesting challenge. The leadership team are great at encouraging you to learn new skills, hone existing ones, and supporting you to do more than you thought you could.

What makes Hectare special is that everyone really cares about what we are building and delivering value to our customers. We are super early in development of one product and the team is so dynamic and enthusiastic that it makes it really fun to work on.

Hectare is a fast growing team and we all lean on each other to come up with the best conclusions for customers. Leaders are approachable and quick to give positive feedback, making it easy to voice opinions and questions alike.

Personal development support with budgets available for training courses along with a general forward looking ethos and adoption of technologies. Mentoring is available, peer knowledge sharing is always encouraged with tricky problems discussed as a group.

The company mission is exciting and the work we are doing has the potential to have a real positive impact not just on the industry but also on the environment.

Hectare fosters a warm and friendly atmosphere with a supportive and welcoming team that genuinely cares for each other and in cultivating a positive team culture. Something that is hard to do in a largely remote working space.

At Hectare great work is celebrated. We nominate colleagues weekly who have amazed through their work and celebrate their success. It is fantastic when you are nominated and it is motivational to know your work is being noticed, appreciated and making a difference.

Hectare is growing incredibly fast. This is fantastic because there are always opportunities to learn new things and develop. It is also incredibly exciting because new products, technology and processes are being developed all the time. I feel I am able to input and my ideas and expertise are taken on board and it is amazing to see them come to life in the products being delivered.

At Hectare your expertise and opinions are always listened to. We are able to ask questions at any time and receive feedback, especially during our all hands meetings.

As a relatively new employee, I have found Hectare's leadership to be incredibly focused. There's an inspiring vision and strategy in place which has been clearly communicated and which underpins monthly company meetings so that we stay focused. I'm clear on what my role is and my part to play in the bigger picture which is incredibly motivating. Communication is open and honest and there's a real transparency I've not experienced in other organisations. Not afraid of openly tackling challenging questions which is very refreshing and instils confidence in the leadership team.

Hectare makes juggling work and parenthood super easy. Being a remote-first organisation plus flexible working hours helps massively but it's also the support and understanding from the top down that has created such a great organisational culture.

Valuing staff and celebrating individual/team successes is something Hectare nails. Shout-outs for AMAZE of the week gives staff a chance to nominate fellow colleagues for their wins and efforts. It's such a great way to end the week on top of a culture that naturally recognises excellent work.
