Founded by four monolithic creatives who’ve worked on AAA games such as Halo, The SIMS and Apex Legends, Midnight Society is a new game studio founded in 2021 that has and extremely experienced, talented team behind it. With public-facing gaming vlogger Dr. Disrespect, a founding member, the company has enjoyed an additional level of publicity within its target audience.
Midnight Society’s debut release will be Deadrop, which is being described as the first “Vertical Extraction Shooter”. The game is being criticized and praised in equal measure for its one-of-a-kind use of in-game NFTs. Though it is still in Alpha testing mode, Deadrop is pioneering new frontiers of blockchain technology within gaming, building on Midnight Society’s first product - the Founders Pass NFT. These NFTs offered customers exclusive access to early beta tests of the game and the chance to provide feedback on it. They were also provided with a cyberpunk artwork NFT from Deadrop, which they will be able to make use of to make extra in-game purchases.
Regardless of gamers' views on NFTs being utilized in-game, Midnight Society will have to find success within the wider market, including those who don’t buy into cryptocurrency. This will mean that the company must cater to both sides of the blockchain debate and ensure Deadrop’s enjoyment by all, not just its NFT buyers.
