Our take

The US housing crisis continues, with extensive build times and limited resources leading to a substantial shortfall in family homes - and a worrying increase in environmental impact, thanks to unsustainable building methods. Mighty Buildings thinks the answer lies with 3D printing.

It seems to be correct, too. Mighty Buildings creates 3D-printed homes reportedly twice as fast, with 95% fewer labor hours, and an order of magnitude less waste than conventional construction methods. This remedies two of the major issues that are hobbling the provision of homes - and low-waste and sustainable practices are likely to be similarly important in future.

With the first Mighty Buildings being put on the market in 2021, time will tell how effective this new technology is at producing long-standing accommodation. This, however, is a broader issue that competitors of Mighty Buildings also face. With companies like ICON bringing their first homes to market around the same time, Mighty Buildings is part of a pioneering group of startups that could stand to make important (and lucrative) progress in future.
