The New York Times is one of the most prominent and well-respected sources of journalism in the United States. Founded in 1851 as the New York Daily Times, the New York Times first coalesced into a singular newspaper in the 1860s as a Sunday edition reporting on developments in the American Civil War. Over the years, the liberal-leaning newspaper has been at the centre of exposing politicians, directors, and many other American scandals.
The New York Times made early use of digital production and began printing online in the mid-90s. Since then, it has expanded its online features considerably and followed competitors like the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal by cutting the size of its print edition.
Throughout the 2020s, the New York Times has had to renovate its digital services and subscription fees in the face of growing competition from substacks. Despite its influence and respect as a source of journalism, the New York Times is, like many industries, facing challenges as it adapts to an increasingly digital world.
