We've created a genuinely new financial product which will get more renewable infrastructure built, like wind and solar farms, by protecting these investments from price risk. We very deliberately integrated the software engineering team with operations from day one, so we would know where to automate first. Software engineers directly help and assist the finance people at the coal-face as they design too.

In the engineering team at Paratus you work very closely with highly intelligent people from an extremely broad range of career backgrounds, including industries that rarely work together. From working at Paratus I've learned about: - the benefits of ephemeral deployment environments in software engineering - how crude oil goes stale in the barrel if left too long - the connection between the frequency of your mains power supply, and the balancing market where electricity is sold hour by hour - how the shipping industry actually trades and moves stuff around the world - how additional sunlight can actually decrease profit margins of solar producers, because if they all produce lots of power at once the price collapses

When I say that "my opinions are valued" at Paratus I don't simply mean to imply that people are supportive when I venture my views on how we should tackle business problems. I mean that I frequently see my opinions on how we should tackle problems translated into practice because senior management is good at listening to them and working with me to identify the best ideas I have on the most impactful areas to prioritise them.
