Our take

ShopRunner is a membership platform connecting over 100 brands with millions of shoppers, creating a seamless shopping experience from browsing to delivery, with perks including two-day shipping and exclusive discounts. ShopRunner were acquired by FedEx in 2020 as part of their e-Commerce portfolio expansion, and now operate as a subsidiary of FedEx Services.

Although ShopRunner sees itself as non-competitive with Amazon Prime (many of their customers additionally hold Prime accounts), they were acquired shortly after FedEx ditched two major Amazon shipping contracts to focus on the remaining e-commerce market. So, ShopRunner are indirectly part of a drive to set up Amazon alternatives. This market remainder could be set to grow, as more retailers leave Amazon and pursue independent sales. In this respect, FedEx are competitively mirroring UPS’ partnership with Shopify.

This could prove significant. With big-name brands like Bloomingdale’s, Kiehl’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue already on the books, ShopRunner are netting the kind of custom that generates real momentum, and are also offering highly sought after services like same-day delivery. As customers begin to look elsewhere for the kind of speedy service and money-saving offers Amazon previously championed, ShopRunner could win big.
