Company mission

To create London tunnels section of HS2 - Britain's new high-speed railway.

Our take

The Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture (SCS JV) is building something huge beneath the streets of London - 13 miles of tunnels for HS2, the UK's new high-speed railway. This section will take trains underground from West Ruislip to Euston, helping millions of people travel faster across the country.

To pull this off, SCS JV is using some seriously smart engineering. They're digging with seven giant tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and installing ventilation shafts, bridges, green tunnels, and huge embankments. Alongside this, they're also being careful to work with the land so train pressure and noise are reduced, and so that systems can safely manage the air pressure within the tunnels.

They've hit some big milestones too, having recently finished tunnelling the Northolt Tunnel West, saving thousands of lorry trips by using rail for materials. Meanwhile, they're also wrapping up the Copthall Tunnel and connecting it to bridges and tracks that will one day carry high-speed trains. Now, they're moving into drainage and landscaping to pull all the project elements together. It's a mammoth task, but SCS JV is on track (literally) to deliver the future of UK railways.
