Our take

Skin Analytics has developed a clinically validated AI imaging system that can identify not only the important skin cancers, but the pre-cancerous lesions which can be treated by GPs and a range of benign lesions. This is done using a low-cost attachment and a smartphone that acquires images of moles. The algorithm detects changes in moles over time that may be early warning signs for melanoma. This early detection means that people needing medical help can get it sooner and reduce the costs to healthcare systems.

Skin Analytics is working with leading academics at Cambridge University, health researchers and expert dermatologists to develop its technology. It believes that the continuous improvement of its algorithm is its key differentiator compared to competitors also working in the space. As the company deploys its solution, it will also face the additional challenge of a highly regulated industry, where its technology will need to be validated by clinical studies.
