SquareEnix was formed as a merger between the two Japanese video game giants Square and Enix in 2003. The company has risen to popularity and are now widely known for its Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Tomb Raider role-playing video game franchises, amongst numerous others. The company's games have sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide.
Its business model is based on the idea of ‘polymorphic content’, consisting of building franchises on multiple potential hardware rather than being restricted by a single gaming platform.
Following the sale of major franchises and IPs, including Tomb Raider and Eidos, the company has set itself as an attractive target for acquisition. As the market for single-player games is extremely tight and Square Enix have seen falling sales in the West, acquisition by a major brand such as Sony looks to be a likely option for the company's future. SquareEnix has also entered the world of Web3, and has plans to release an NFT game -called Symbiogenesis - on the Ethereum sidechain network Polygon.
