Standard AI's mission is to revolutionize the way the world shops.
-4% employee growth in 12 months
Automated checkouts allow brick-and-mortar retailers to cut down substantially on labor costs, and for the majority of consumers they reportedly represent an attractive kind of queue-free, contactless shopping experience. So it’s no surprise that the race is on to develop a market-cornering solution. Standard AI is one startup throwing its hat into the ring.
Standard AI’s technology uses cameras, computer vision, and AI to track shopper activity and automatically log and process their purchases. This means all that’s required for installation are carefully positioned cameras and some onsite servers - this makes it competitively fast and accessible, especially for smaller retailers. Plus, whilst it’s not the only company using this approach, it’s the only one making a firm commitment to not using facial recognition technology. This could prove important as the technology is more broadly adopted.
Standard’s tech has so far, however, only been deployed in a handful of convenience stores. With momentum for cashierless checkouts growing, Standard will need to roll out faster to avoid being left behind. Startup competitors like Zippin and Grabango, for example, are already making impressive headway, and of course major competitors like Amazon and Walmart are beginning to dominate too.
