Our take
Maths is a difficult subject for both students and teachers, and not just academically. The piles of textbooks and reams of paper tests to fill out and mark are time consuming and inefficient, and can reduce student engagement with the subject. Enter Summatic, a UK-based startup with a maths platform which combines teaching resources, testing and marking in a single easy-to-use package.
Designed for use in university departments and in schools, Summatic has been picked up by a number of major institutions, including Cambridge Judge Business School and Bristol University. Its solution has shown a much higher rate of engagement with the learning and testing materials than in previous years, resulting in much higher scores on average for the students.
Summatic is not the only maths platform in the educational space, but its integrated approach and focus on university-level learning gives it a niche not shared by competitors such as bluetick or Mathigon. While it is early days yet for Summatic, if it can expand its market share it stands to build a significant business in this sector.

Charles Roddie
(CEO)Charles has a BA in Mathematics (first class) from Trinity College, Cambridge, and a PhD in Economics from Princeton. He has lectured in Mathematics and Economics at Oxford and Cambridge universities.
Kevin Crooks
(CTO)Kevin has a PhD in Mathematics from Cambridge, where he studied numerical methods and enjoyed explaining mathematical ideas. He has since become an experienced software developer.
