Our take
Swish Fibre is one of the handful of telecoms companies engaging in a heated race to poach customers from the UK’s major broadband incumbent, BT. Thanks to the latter’s delays in upgrading its copper lines to faster fibre optic materials, a gap in the market has opened up for smaller, niftier, and higher-quality rivals to swoop in. They’re known as ‘altnets’, and Swish Fibre is among them.
The company is focused on building out 10Gbps networks for business and residential customers, available on long-term or rolling contracts. It operates predominantly in the south of England, although the company has recently launched a Yorkshire subsidiary.
This relatively limited scope means Swish Fibre is facing the same issues as its altnet competitors: how to pull in sufficient customers to actually turn a profit. Some estimates suggest altnets need to be scooping up around 40% of the market in any given area where they’re laying down fibre. This won’t be an easy task for Swish Fibre, with giants like Virgin Media O2 joining the fray alongside altnets with broader nationwide scope like CityFibre. The company has made a strong start, but the battle won’t be an easy one.
