The way we prove who we are online is still surprisingly clunky, having to hang over more personal information than necessary, whether we are proving our age, address or qualifications. So with digital services growing fast and new EU identity rules on the horizon, there is a clear need for a simpler, safer way to share only the information that matters.
Telefónica Tech is tackling this with self-sovereign identity. Its solution uses verifiable credentials that people can store on their own devices and share when needed (for example, when proving they are over 18 without revealing their full ID). For organisations, it provides a secure way to issue, check and manage these credentials.
The timing is no accident either, as the company has launched its solution ahead of the EU's EUDI Wallet framework coming into force across member states at the end of 2026. With applications ranging from digital certificates and age checks to tackling online fraud, Telefónica Tech is ready for a future where proving who you are could be as simple as scanning a QR code.
