To put women's voices at the centre of healthcare research and development.
78% of women have experienced unwanted side effects from their contraception. However, shamefully it’s only recently that serious investment arrived for the Femtech space. The Lowdown is one of a crop of startups cropping up attempting to solve a problem millions of women face.
Specifically, the startup’s flagship contribution is crowdsourcing the impossibly siloed data of contraceptive side effects through a kind of ‘Tripadvisor for your vagina. It has expanded its remit into a broader range of health conditions, publishing user-generated experiences of medications, health conditions and products giving customers the tools to make more informed decisions about their health.
The Lowdown has done a great job of opening up the conversation around female contraception and women's wider health and has raised funding from big names like Speedinvest and Entrepreneur First. However, the team will admit that even more needs to be done concerning women's healthcare and will look for an equally progressive approach from policymakers and pharmaceutical companies.
