Our take

In the Internet age, more people tune into radio via their smartphones and laptops than ever before, with the internet radio industry set to reach over $5.6 trillion by 2025. TuneIn is a digital radio service that allows listeners to connect to 120,000 streaming radio stations and nearly 6 million podcasts.

It’s a free service, although the company also offers a premium subscription with commercial-free listening for many stations, and reduced ads for others. The app is now used by 75 million active monthly listeners globally. However, a recent legal battle with Sony Music and Warner Music in the UK courts left the company having to restrict overseas stations in the UK, with the threat of similar outcomes in other countries.

Still, TuneIn remains a leader in internet radio station aggregators, alongside other big players like Spotify, Deezer, and Apple, the latter of which TuneIn forged an alliance with in late 2019.
