Who you are

- 4+ years of design management experience in a software company with design embedded as part of cross-functional product development teams
- 10+ years of product design experience in a consumer software company
- You know when and how to get into the details to drive high-quality decisions
- You’re an exceptional product thinker who understands how to drive business business impact through design
- You have a proven track record setting a vision for great customer experiences, inspiring others to get behind a vision, translating a vision into a prioritized roadmap, and ensuring your team ships high quality experiences to bring the team’s vision to customers
- You have strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
- You’ve helped your teams grow in their creative practice by teaching them how to effectively use tools such as user experience methods, innovation, ideation, storytelling, prototyping, design frameworks, concept visualization, problem-framing skills and design principles

What the job involves
- Wealthfront is looking for a Design Director to support our Cash area
- Reporting directly to the Design Director for the Cash and Growth, this role is ideal for the design leader who enjoys a mix of direct impact on vision and strategy and unlocking impact by empowering the team they support
- This role is best suited for someone who loves having impact through the scope and quality of their work rather than through the number of people they manage
- Building great financial products requires digging diligently into the details and going deep to untangle complex problems
- We’re seeking a design leader who cares deeply about all phases of product development—from defining new opportunities to shipped pixels
- The Cash area aims to make organizing and managing finances dead simple
- This covers everything from core platform capabilities like money movement, to getting people instant access to their savings to confidently make a down payment, to helping a couple think through their shared financial picture
- We leverage technology to build sophisticated financial products that put people in control of their finances

- At Wealthfront, Design is an equal partner to Engineering and Product. It plays an important role in the executive staff that collectively makes all critical strategic decisions
- As a leader of the organization, your role will be to model this, develop these skills in your design teams, and contribute to the company-level design organization as a member of the design leadership team
- Driving company impact through supporting 5 senior and staff level product and content designers: staffing, hiring, guiding their work, growing their skills, facilitating career development, cultivating excellent performance, and building an inclusive culture
- Facilitating effective cross-functional collaboration exercises, vision workshops, design sprints etc. to quickly bring clarity and alignment to new opportunities
- Supporting designers in, and individually partnering with PM, engineering, user research, and data science to directly drive clarity on ambiguous opportunities and vision to support area strategy, prioritization, and tradeoffs
- Coordinating a complex roadmap of long-term projects that impact core Wealthfront platform capabilities and involve multiple stakeholders and external partners
- Developing ongoing product initiatives including Instant Withdrawals, Joint Access and Management, and unifying the transfer experience across all Wealthfront products, and more
- Helping us innovate and scale as a company by partnering with leaders across Wealthfront
- Identifying and pursuing impactful ideas on everything from what we build to how we work, such that we are able to learn as quickly and efficiently as possible
Our take
Wealthfront's platform takes the hassle and stress out of investing, financial planning, borrowing, and saving with automated services and financial advice. Its robo-advisor allows customers to set a financial limit on their accounts, anything above the limit is moved into an investment account or another account chosen by the customer.
Indeed, it has some similarities to round-up apps like Acorn, which round up purchases and put the spare change into savings. There are other companies working on robo-advisors too, such as Morgan Stanley and Betterment.
Nonetheless, with an impressive and steadily increasing list of clients, with more than $50B of assets under its management, Wealthfront achieved Unicorn status in September 2022. Wealthfront is diversifying its offerings, branching into high-interest checking accounts and investment advice.
