Role
Who you are
- You have been an individual contributor for 6+ years and have worked as a senior-senior/staff engineer with a backend focus
- You have worked in well functioning small teams for 2+ years
- You have managed a team of 4+ engineers before. During this time you were responsible for hiring new people onto the team and were responsible for performance reviews
What the job involves
- As a small company with engineering at the heart of it, this role has an opportunity to make a really big impact. You’ll be working in the leadership team to set the direction of the product, managing a team of 5 very good engineers and get the chance to lead product and technical projects as well
- Before getting into the details of the role, it’s worth saying up front that although this role has a managerial element, we don’t have enough engineers to manage or enough team dysfunction for management to be a full time job. So this role will be writing code at least 70% + of the time with some of that code being written for important projects
- *Technical architecture* As one of the most senior engineers on the team you will take responsibility for some of our key services such as billing, infrastructure, auth or dev ops. You will oversee the other engineers who will take responsibility for
- *Planning* You’ll co-own the product roadmap with the CEO (and acting Product Lead). This means making sure that we are always working on the highest impact projects and leveraging your technical knowledge to order and plan the work. You are also responsible for guiding the OKR process for the project teams. You’ll help these teams articulate goals that support both business initiatives and technology quality
- *Team management* You will manage (and work within) a team of 5 engineers who split into 2 project teams. You’ll be ultimately responsible for the velocity and quality of their work so the two main jobs here are setting the standard for performance for each team member and improving the processes by which Spill makes software

Our take
Some emotional pain — like heartbreak or taking a risk and failing — can help us to learn and grow, but much of it is unnecessary: prolonged low mood, imposter syndrome and crippling social anxiety for instance are entirely negative. Spill believes that the solution to unnecessary emotional pain is already here — it just hasn't been evenly distributed yet.
Counselling and therapy have existed for over a century, and have been shown time and time again to dramatically increase emotional stability in as little as one or two sessions, and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety as successfully as antidepressants. Spill's solution is to provide text-based chat therapy as an employee benefit, allowing their customer's staff to access BACP-registered (and equivalently qualified) counsellors on demand.
Spill aspires to become 'everything that the NHS, private health insurance and employee assistance programmes are not' - easy to access, well designed, and 100% unintimidating. It is currently working with over 600 businesses, including Rightmove and Monzo, and is delivering more than 30,000 counselling sessions per year.
