Role
Who you are
- Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a closely related quantitative field and one (1) year of experience in a data science or machine learning role, which may include industry experience, internships, or research assistantships, performing the following duties:
- Programming in Python for data processing and machine learning development, using pandas, NumPy, and scikit-learn
- Writing SQL queries to extract, transform, and analyze data from relational or structured datasets
- Working with tabular or event-driven datasets, including data cleaning, normalization, and schema alignment
- Implementing automated data processing and model training pipelines, including feature engineering and data transformation
- Developing and evaluating machine learning models using performance metrics and validation techniques
- Supporting transition of machine learning models from development to production, including packaging, automation, or model versioning; and
- Using Git for version control in a collaborative development environment
What the job involves
- Lead development and deployment of AI/ML models in clinical workflows for healthcare decision-making, patient targeting, and clinical intervention optimization
- Duties include: design machine learning prediction models and LLM-based tools including multi-agent scheduling systems
- Create technical documentation, system architecture, and project specifications
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, and care teams to define goals and timelines
- Build and optimize Python-based data pipelines for claims data and CRM systems
- Conduct research on healthcare data structures and predictive modeling techniques for publication in peer-reviewed journals
- Manage multiple projects independently and supervise junior data scientists, providing technical leadership and mentorship. Telecommuting available. Multiple positions
Our take
Over 80M people in the US receive healthcare coverage from Medicaid (a number that continues to grow), yet care is delivered through a highly fragmented network of independent primary care providers (PCPs). These providers often lack the infrastructure and coordination needed to effectively manage complex, high-need populations.
Waymark is addressing this gap by building a tech-enabled care model that combines data infrastructure with embedded clinical support. Rather than acting purely as a software layer, the company partners with health plans and PCPs to both coordinate and deliver care, deploying teams that include community health workers, pharmacists, care coordinators, and behavioral health specialists. Allowing Waymark not just to facilitate communication (e.g.. between doctors and pharmacist managing a diabetic patient's medications), but to actively support ongoing care.
A core part of Waymark's approach is using predicative analytics to identify "rising-risk" patients, those who are not yet high-cost but are likely to become so without intervention. By intervening earlier, the company aims to prevent avoidable hospitalizations and improve long-term outcomes, effectively expanding provider capacity for underserved populations.
Having now moved beyond early pilots, Waymark is scaling through value-based partnerships with Medicaid managed care organizations, working across tens of thousands of patients. While challenges remain in translating proven models to national scale, growing alignment among payers, providers, and policymakers around improving Medicaid outcomes provides strong tailwinds for continued adoption.
