Role

Who you are

  • We are looking for someone with deep financial modeling expertise and a track record of success in dynamic, fast-growing environments
  • Curious about who thrives at Whatnot? We’ve found that low ego, a growth mindset, and leaning into action and high impact goes a long way here
  • 2+ years of experience in investment banking, private equity / VC, consulting or strategic finance at a fast-paced tech company
  • Exceptional financial modeling skills with the ability to tackle ambiguous problems and produce elegant and insightful analyses
  • Experience building and maintaining complex financial models reflecting operational business dynamics
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to partner cross-functionally, influence, and communicate financial concepts to all business partners

Desirable

  • Experience in Strategic Finance at Software / Consumer Marketplace and / or growth-stage companies
  • Bonus Points for familiarity with SQL, Python, or other data languages
  • Familiarity with financial planning software (we use Pigment here at Whatnot!)

What the job involves

  • The Whatnot Finance team consists of Strategic Finance, FP&A, Tax, and Accounting
  • The Strategic Finance team leads Whatnot’s financial modeling, strategic planning, fundraising, investor relations and diligence efforts
  • We strive to be agents of change and are highly involved in strategic decisions for the company
  • As a member of our small but mighty 3-person team, you will help define our position in the company by partnering cross-functionally with business units to evaluate key questions, tackle problems and drive results
  • Own financial reporting and forecasting for core business profitability, focused on top-line (GMV and Revenue) metrics and Gross Profit / Contribution Margin and above, with growth opportunities to be a functional owner of key profitability drivers
  • Act as a business partner to cross-functional teams (Category Expansion, Strategic Partnerships, Marketing, Engineering) to own strategic financial modeling and evaluation of business opportunities
  • Evaluate and support Pricing and Promotions initiatives across the business by deeply understanding financial implications
  • Support month-end close process via Gross Profit reporting (forecast vs. actual variance analysis, key metrics reporting)
  • Own and drive strategic profitability levers, transforming operational and financial data into financial insights and recommendations
  • Assist in the creation of internal monthly reporting packages and external quarterly reporting deliverables (i.e. Board Meeting presentations and investor reporting), in partnership with various Finance & Accounting teams and Data

Our take

The collectible toy market is large, and Whatnot has built a unique social platform that enables sellers to use livestreams to showcase their products and reach more buyers. The company’s focus is on collectible toys, some of which are rare and can cost thousands of dollars, and has also expanded to sports cards.

The idea of Whatnot was led by buyer trends. Instagram's live feature became a popular place for selling toys and trading cards, but of course was not set up to facilitate bidding or handling payments after a sale occurs. Whatnot combines live showcasing with follow-up sale capabilities, thus serving the community in a more novel way than established collectibles market players such as eBay.

The company has grown fast. It was established in 2019 and has already expanded from its original category - Funko Pop figurines - to Pokemon cards, pins, sports cards, and many more. There is still plenty of scope for expanding into new categories, as the company aims to establish itself as the go-to for this large niche, which will be facilitated by the strong levels of funding that Whatnot has raised.
