Who you are
- A relevant degree or equivalent work experience with 15+ years in software engineering
- Proven ability to lead large, cross-functional initiatives, collaborating effectively with product, design, and engineering teams
- Strong technical influence shapes engineering direction, defines quality standards, and drives best practices to ensure engineering excellence
- Deep expertise in software design patterns, enabling the development of clean, well-structured, and idiomatic code that fully leverages modern programming language
- Ability to architect and write scalable, efficient solutions using advanced algorithms and data structures, optimizing for various technical and business constraints
- Expertise in test automation, observability, and debugging strategies to ensure software reliability and maintainability
- Strong understanding of data engineering principles, ensuring effective data processing, storage, and scalability
- Strong knowledge of security best practices, proactively addressing vulnerabilities and designing secure systems
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, drive problems from conception to resolution, and advocate for solutions with a strong sense of ownership
- Ability to communicate difficult technical concepts in precise, concise, and unambiguous terms
- Appreciate simple design
- Enjoy implementing robust engineering strategies, including best logging, tracing, and troubleshooting practices to improve observability and reliability
- Will take ownership during critical incidents, working with on-call teams to diagnose and resolve complex production issues swiftly and effectively
- A proven leader who identifies areas needing engineering direction and sees them through to impactful solutions
- Can write clean, well-tested code in your sleep, with a test-first mindset
- Very well-versed in Domain Driven Design
- Enjoy working with other engineers in a collaborative and iterative environment
- Communicate well with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Experience or familiarity with one or more of the following technologies: JVM-based languages, PHP, MySQL, Postgres, DynamoDB, NoSQL, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS, Elasticsearch

- As a Principal Software Engineer at Favor you will be responsible for all phases of development, testing, and deployment of our applications
- Champion best practices and scalable architectural patterns, enabling engineers to drive adoption across the org for a maintainable and reliable codebase
- Lead and drive large-scale technical initiatives, balancing short-term practical needs with long-term architectural vision while securing buy-in from engineers and leadership
- Eliminate barriers to scale through technology and process and provide building blocks of world-class applications and services
- Influence across disciplines, cross-functional teams, and leadership, effectively bridging technical and business considerations
- Serve as a mentor and technical leader, fostering growth in engineers and raising the overall technical bar through coaching and shared expertise
Our take
More and more people are looking to get things delivered fast, and businesses are trying to find inventive ways to meet the demand and get people’s purchases to them as quickly as possible. Favor solves this problem, with an on-demand delivery service that depends on “runners” to get products to customers quickly.
Customers can browse on the Favor app and select items from their list or input items from other stores in the delivery zone, and Favor runners will collect the item and deliver it within an hour. For customers in a hurry, this is obviously appealing. While many on-demand delivery services struggle to scale, Favor itself has managed to scale its operations across Texas and expanded into Philadelphia in mid 2022.
This centralization has given the company an advantage over competitors who have since gone out of business, but it isn’t yet clear if other competitors will imitate Favor's approach to gain market share. The company faces strong challenges from deep-pocketed rivals like DoorDash and Uber Eats.
