Role
Who you are
- Strong Kubernetes experience, including tuning and troubleshooting on-prem Linux systems under real load
- Hands-on CI/CD background — GitLab CI specifically is a plus
- GitOps in practice, ideally with ArgoCD
- Software development skills in Python, Golang or Rust — enough to build and maintain the tooling around your infrastructure, not just configure it
- Configuration management experience with Ansible and/or Terraform
- A security mindset grounded in DevSecOps practices — supply chain security experience is a genuine advantage here
- The communication skills to work effectively across teams and document your work clearly
- Beyond the technical side, we care about how you work with people. The team is small, distributed, and collaborative by habit — we're looking for someone who shares knowledge freely, lifts those around them, and doesn't treat collaboration as an afterthought
What the job involves
- The DevOps Platform team builds, maintains and scales the developer tooling platform and infrastructure that hundreds of engineers at Proton rely on daily, across both on-premises and cloud environments
- Security isn't an afterthought — it's a core constraint we design around
- Own and scale CI/CD infrastructure handling tens of thousands of jobs daily and growing — that means capacity planning, runner architecture, and making the platform reliable as load patterns shift in ways that don't follow simple rules
- Deepen our GitOps workflows built on ArgoCD, from day-to-day operational improvements to more structural work on how we manage cluster state across environments
- Advance our supply chain security posture — we've made deliberate investments in SAST and artifact attestation, and there's meaningful work ahead to see them through
- Troubleshoot hard infrastructure problems across network, application, and system layers — the kind where the answer isn't obvious and requires pulling on multiple threads at once
Our take
Proton is a Geneva-based startup founded by former CERN worker and internet privacy advocate Andy Yen. It provides internet users with encrypted webmail, calendar, drive, and VPN services.
Proton maintains its pro-privacy ethos using a Swiss VPN, protected by strict Swiss privacy laws. In essence, it has established a connection between the personal and the political, smartly utilising the country’s national laws to benefit people and organisations globally. Proton also funds charities and movements such as the World Wide Web Foundation and Netblocks, further cementing it as an influential NGO.
Perhaps Proton’s most important quality is its determination to maintain independence from advertisers and companies. Originally founded on donations, Proton has funded itself via grants rather than venture capital so that all of its customer's data is never at risk of being mined. One effect of this is that to keep up with the increasing competition in the data privacy sector, Proton has expanded its services to allow more cross-selling and simultaneously has more products to offer, such as drive and calendar privacy.
