- 8+ years of experience in backend software engineering, with a deep understanding of distributed systems and cloud-native development (we use AWS)
- Expert-level proficiency in backend programming in Go (Golang)
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, including designing, maintaining, and scaling infrastructure for cloud-native applications
- Proven ability to design scalable software systems and abstractions used by other teams
- Track record of leading large, cross-team projects and mentoring engineers
- Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with a proven track record of influencing without direct authority

- LaunchDarkly is looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to play a key role in shaping the future of how software is built within LaunchDarkly on the Fundamentals team
- LaunchDarkly is at a transformative stage, building new products that enables engineering teams to release software faster, and with more confidence
- The Fundamentals team is integral to this evolution, creating internal tools and systems that empower our product engineering teams to deliver these exceptional products
- Our mission is to build new internal services, software engineering practices and abstractions from which the entire engineering team will adopt and benefit
- Your success will require a deep understanding of how software is built at LaunchDarkly, spot common patterns to codify, provide new paved paths, and advocate for broad adoption of new capabilities by other engineering teams
- Architect, implement, support, and maintain internal services, abstractions, and best practices that accelerate product engineering
- Analyze and understand existing engineering workflows to identify opportunities for improvement and codify common patterns
- Lead cross-functional projects from technical design to production release, collaborating with product and platform engineering teams
- Provide guidance and mentorship to other engineers, promoting best practices and improving overall code quality
- Champion new internal capabilities and drive their adoption by product teams, often requiring influence without direct authority
Our take
Feature flags are a powerful software development tool, allowing teams to modify system behavior without changing code, therefore minimizing risk. If a business has a new feature they want to test, they can then roll it out to a small set of users before letting it go live. These companies can, for example, get quick feedback on the new feature and fix any bugs, or roll back any changes.
LaunchDarkly allows companies to run tests like this by activating the new code for only a small set of users prior to launch. Typically running these tests requires lots of developer time - a daunting and expensive prospect for most rapidly growing businesses - and can risk disruption to the user experience if testing takes place on the live product.
The platform is used by more than 1,500 customers, including the likes of IBM, Intuit and Atlassian. Signalling a change in strategy, the company shook up its management in 2023 and is now aiming to scale its already strong growth under the leadership of Dan Rogers, a product and marketing specialist with an impressive track record at Rubrik, AWS and Microsoft. It is now well poised to develop into a leading business in the feature management space.
