Company mission
To create a world where people have full control over their work lives.
Role
Who you are
- Several years of experience leading software engineers as a people manager, ideally in a product-led B2C or marketplace environment
- A strong technical foundation: you've worked as a senior engineer yourself and can still credibly engage on architecture, code, and technical trade-offs
- Comfort with our stack: we build in TypeScript across both backend and frontend, with some older services still in Java and Groovy
- A product mindset: you care about outcomes over output and know how to connect engineering work to user and business impact
- Experience growing engineers across levels – coaching, feedback, and performance management hold no secrets for you
- Pragmatism in balancing delivery speed, quality, and maintainability
- Fluent English (our company language); German is a plus
What the job involves
- We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Supply engineering team – the team that owns the talent side of our marketplace. Your team of 5-7 engineers builds the experience our Zenjobbers use to discover, book, and get paid for jobs, and the services that keep the supply side of the marketplace healthy
- You'll partner closely with your product counterpart. This is a player-coach role: we're looking for someone who leads through people but stays close enough to the code to guide architecture decisions, unblock the team, and keep the technical bar high
- Lead, coach, and grow a cross-functional team of full-stack engineers – owning their development, engagement, and performance
- Own delivery for the Supply domain: shape the roadmap with your product partner, break down complex initiatives, and ensure the team ships predictably and with quality
- Engage deeply with the product: question assumptions, challenge proposals, and bring ideas of your own – constructively, and always with the business impact in mind
- Embrace how AI keeps reshaping engineering as a craft: advocate for the increased autonomy these tools bring, and support your team by role-modelling their usage
- Stay hands-on: guide system design and architecture decisions, review code where it matters, and contribute when it accelerates the team
- Drive operational excellence – monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement of the team's engineering practices
- Hire and onboard engineers as the team evolves, and contribute to engineering-wide initiatives beyond your team
- Collaborate with other Engineering Managers and stakeholders across Product, Operations, and Marketing to align the supply side of the marketplace with company goals
Our take
Digital-first, flexible work gained traction with the rise of ride-sharing apps, but finding automated, on-demand talent for industries like grocery stores, events, and bars was still a major challenge - until Zenjobs came along. The company has revolutionised the space by making it easier for businesses to access the temporary staff they need.
Now, Zenjob is competing with other VC-backed startups like Tempo and Flexy, all vying to become the go-to flexible work marketplace across Europe. Despite the growing competition though, Zenjob has built a solid reputation with both companies and employees, positioning itself as a potential leader in this fast-evolving sector.
To stay ahead, Zenjob has invested its funding in expanding across Europe, with a focus on the UK. With fierce competition, Zenjob has managed to hold its ground and continue attracting investor interest, ensuring it can keep up with the market's rapid growth.
