Who you are
- Have strong hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails (at least 7-8 years)
- Combine technical expertise with strong product and business understanding, enjoy solving complex problems and care deeply about your users

What the job involves
- As a Senior Software Engineer at Pennylane, your squad is your primary focus. You will contribute to building reliable, scalable and user-focused products, while helping the engineers around you grow and raising the quality of our technical execution. You will:
- Understand and frame user and product problems, using your product knowledge to help your squad deliver simple, pragmatic and valuable solutions
- Lead significant technical deliveries within your squad, from understanding the problem to designing, implementing, testing and operating the solution in production
- Investigate and resolve complex production issues, using monitoring, observability and data analysis tools to identify root causes and prevent recurrence
- Design and evolve robust solutions, identifying performance, scalability and reliability opportunities and turning them into pragmatic technical improvements
- Bring strong expertise in at least one major part of our stack, while being able to join a new team and become autonomous on a high-impact initiative within a few weeks
- Improve engineering practices across the organization, through high-quality code reviews, pair programming, documentation, RFCs and the adoption of AI-assisted development without compromising software quality
- Act as a role model and a driver for other engineers, sharing knowledge, providing actionable feedback and helping the team continuously improve its technical skills and ways of working
- Collaborate effectively with other teams when needed, proactively unblocking technical topics and clearly communicating progress, risks, decisions and results to the relevant stakeholders
- Contribute to the Pennylane tech community, through technical content, onboarding, interviews, incident resolution, tech initiatives, meetups or other community-building activities
Application process
- You will first have a general chat with a Talent Acquisition Manager (30 min)
- You’ll then have a test-home assignment + a debriefing session with two of our software engineers (1 hour)
- You’ll have a last culture-fit discussion with two people from our tech leadership (1 h)
- We make sure we move fast ; you can expect the recruitment process with us to last between 15 and 25 days in total
Our take
In multiple mature markets, companies have been using QuickBooks, Xero and other SaaS solutions for accounting, but it is a fragmented industry with each country using its own software solution. In France, there is no definitive SaaS solution for accounting.
Pennylane wants to overhaul current tools and modernise the tech stack of accounting firms, by connecting directly with third-party services that hold valuable information. Accounting firms can use Pennylane collaboratively by accessing the platform to centralise receipts, create invoices and automate tasks. Instead of sending information back and forth with spreadsheets and photo attachments, both clients and accounting firms can interact directly on the platform.
Pennylane has a significant market opportunity ahead, with an ambitious goal to become the preferred management platform for European companies. The company already claims an impressive number of customers and strong backing which will allow it to further develop its platform and expand to other markets in Europe.
