Who you are
- We are looking for a detail-driven Legal Billing Specialist to join our growing Legal Operations Team
- The ideal candidate is tech-savvy, numbers-oriented, and thrives under recurring billing deadlines, bringing a collaborative and transparent approach to partnering with attorneys, law firms, and Finance
- A bachelor’s degree or higher preferred; coursework or a background in accounting, finance, or business administration is a plus
- At least 2+ years of legal billing or eBilling experience in an in-house legal department, law firm, or both
- Hands-on experience with an eBilling / matter management platform—Onit, Legal Tracker, Brightflag —and familiarity with LEDES invoice formats
- Working knowledge of outside counsel billing guidelines, alternative fee arrangements, rate structures, and accruals
- Strong Excel and analytical skills, with an eye for accuracy in high-volume, deadline-driven billing cycles
- Understanding of financial management principles and process-improvement experience
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build relationships across the business and with external law firms at all levels
- A proactive, entrepreneurial approach—recognizing needs, anticipating issues, and following through with a strong sense of ownership
- Comfortable with new challenges and frequent change, with the ability to manage several priorities simultaneously
- Experience with tools such as Ironclad, Evisort, Tonkean, and Google Suite is a plus
What the job involves
- In this role, you will own the day-to-day of outside counsel and vendor billing across our matter management and eBilling platforms—reviewing invoices, enforcing our Outside Counsel Guidelines and negotiated fee arrangements, and keeping our legal spend accurate, compliant, and on time
- This is a billing-focused role that also supports the broader Legal Operations function
- Prepare, review, and process outside counsel and vendor invoices; audit prebills and invoices, and flag rate errors, block-billing, math discrepancies, and billing-guideline violations before approval
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the eBilling and matter management platform (Onit), including invoice intake, LEDES processing, rejections and appeals, accruals, and international / AP invoice processing
- Enforce compliance with Lyft’s Outside Counsel Guidelines (OCG) and negotiated fee and alternative fee arrangements (AFAs); process write-offs, write-downs, and adjustments with clear documentation and audit trail
- Manage timekeeper and billing-rate submissions and approvals; maintain accurate rate cards, matter budgets, and phase/task coding across the portfolio
- Serve as the primary point of contact for billing inquiries and disputes; resolve discrepancies promptly by partnering with attorneys, law firms, and support staff
- Partner closely with the Legal Operations eBilling Lead and with Finance / Accounts Payable on accruals, month- and quarter-end close, reconciliation, and payment status
- Onboard outside counsel and vendors to our billing program, including engagement letters, budgets, and billing-guideline acknowledgment
- Develop and iterate on spend metrics, dashboards, and benchmarking through data analytics to measure efficiency, surface trends, and identify cost-savings opportunities
- Codify billing workflows into playbooks and intake templates; support platform efficiencies, configuration, testing, and report validation
- Support broader Legal Operations initiatives and process improvements as needed
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialled and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app, whilst the acquisition of European competitor Freenow could add 6 million new riders to its platform in 2026.
