Role
Who you are
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent demonstrated work experience
- Strong full-stack engineering skills. Our stack is Ruby on Rails and React/TypeScript, but we care more about your ability to learn and ship than your resume matching our package.json
- You've built software that real people use
- You can talk to users, understand their problems, and translate that into well-built software. This role is deeply collaborative
- You take ownership. When your software breaks on the floor, you fix it
- You're comfortable with ambiguity. Manufacturing at this scale hasn't been done before for this kind of device
What the job involves
- The Robot Manufacturing Software team allows Neuralink to build neurosurgical robots at a scale that has never been done before
- Every robot that ships was tracked, assembled, calibrated, and verified through the software you'll build
- This is the backbone of how we scale from early production to meeting real clinical demand
- We're a small, tightly knit team - and this role is the first dedicated owner of the robot manufacturing software stack
- As the company scales, so will the complexity, and you'll be the one designing and building the systems that make all of that possible
- We operate as a tight, high-trust team
- You'll have direct ownership and the autonomy to solve hard problems, but also high expectations
- We're moving fast to meet clinical demand and keep up with deployments. 60-hour weeks are not uncommon, and there are stretches where the pace is high
- As a Software Engineer on the Robot Manufacturing Team, you'll work directly with robot engineers and surgical engineers to understand what they need, then build it
- You won't be handed a spec doc from a product manager three layers removed from the problem
- Some days you're heads-down writing code all day
- On another day, you might spend a morning pairing with a robot engineer to understand a new calibration process, then spend the afternoon building the tracking system for it
- The constant is that you're close to the problem and shipping solutions quickly
- Projects you will work on:
- Inventory and warehouse management systems that track every component going into a neurosurgical robot - from raw materials through final assembly
- Lifecycle management software that engineers use to build, calibrate, verify, and maintain robots throughout their entire lifespan
- Whatever else needs building. The scope of problems here is wide and constantly evolving. You'll have real ownership over the direction this stack grows
Our take
Neuralink is a company developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect humans and computers. Its primary objective is to help people with paralysis to gain more autonomy in their everyday lives, with the possibility that its tech will be used to enhance the abilities of the wider community further in the future.
For many, brain implants such as those being developed by Neuralink belong firmly in the realm of sci-fi. That said, the idea of interfacing machines with the brain for medical purposes has existed for some time, with examples including cochlear implants and Deep Brain Stimulation. Having secured FDA approval in 2023, Neuralink has since completed human trials, with Elon Musk announcing in 2024 that its first patients are reacting well - a significant step in its ambitious proposals becoming a reality.
The human tests have made the company more appealing to investors, and Neuralink has since raised considerable funds towards advancing its research. It should be noted, though, that despite this positive attention, much discussion surrounding the company regards its animal testing practices, which - some sources say - may have resulted in more animal deaths than necessary as staff were pressured to push for the FDA approval. Despite the ethical debate surrounding Neuralink's practices, its implants seem to be working at their early stages.
