Who you are
- 10+ years software engineering experience
- Strong technical and software engineering fundamentals including a demonstrated ability to build and own large-scale, highly available consumer products
- Ability to explain complex business and technical concepts to all audiences
- Experience leading large cross-team initiatives at companies that have gone through periods of rapid business or organizational growth
- Track record of successfully mentoring and developing technical leaders

- Has defined and executed on longer term (multi-quarter +) technological visions or strategies for multi-team organizations
- Has driven initiatives of significant depth or breadth with demonstrated results in engineering process, technology platforms, or overall productivity of others

What the job involves
- The Capital Supply Vertical is the fuel that powers Upstart’s AI based lending operations
- Spread across five dynamic high performance teams; Capital Supply is in charge of onboarding and maintaining Capital Supply relations with both our Lending Partners and Investors
- We provide both our internal and external business partners with reports, forecasting, financial reporting and help optimize the connection between our customer base and the funding suppliers
- As a Principal Engineer at Upstart on the Capital Supply team, you will collaborate with all parts of the Upstart business and engineering, including Machine Learning, Data Engineering, Product Management, Product Design, Platform, Servicing, Lending Partnerships, and Auto
- The role will report directly to a head of Capital Market Engineering and work closely with all five of the Capital Supply product engineering teams
- Your goal is to autonomously identify and prioritize high impact work that will ultimately make the Capital Supply Vertical successful
- Help define the Capital Supply engineering’s longer term technical roadmap ensuring alignment with business objectives
- Guide the architectural evolution of Capital Supply systems with an emphasis on systems shared across the Capital Market engineering teams
- Uncover and drive alignment across complex technical requirements, designs, trade-offs, influencing product direction
- Proactively evaluate, prototype, and roll out new technologies/frameworks to help cultivate a culture of innovation
- Partner with product leaders to shape product direction and drive business impact across all Capital Supply products
- Lead from the front, while mentoring and developing technical leaders
- Identify and prioritize high leverage and impactful opportunities
- This role is available in the following locations: Remote, San Mateo, Columbus, Austin
Our take
Business startups across the world usually seek out funding, but this is often difficult for companies led by millenials. Millennial entrepreneurs with an excellent track record in business are increasingly requiring access to these loans, but their lack of credit history results in proposals frequently being declined.
Upstart provides loans that are aimed towards the target audience of millennials with entrepreneurial intentions, offering low interest rates that average at 12%. The company claims these rates are 10% lower than traditional lenders, and the service aims towards ensuring that the client is subject to no further fees (such as prepayment penalties).
Upstart claims that its unique selling point lies in the fact that its loans are funded the day after approval. Whilst the service focuses on personal loans for business, the company has also expanded to offer loans for car refinancing. Over 2022 and 23, Upstart's stocks fell dramatically and an investigation was undertaken by a law firm representing the company's long-term investors over alleged security law violations by its board of directors. However, the end of 2023 saw a 20% stock value rise for Upstart after its partnership with Mutual Security Credit Union led to a rise in customers, indicating that it is on the up after a difficult two years.
