Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate has deep financial markets experience in the securities and cryptocurrency industry, including at least 5+ years of experience practicing as either outside counsel or in-house counsel for financial services firms (mutual fund, broker-dealer, investment advisor, OTC trading businesses, money transmitter dealing in virtual assets preferred)
- Substantial subject matter expertise in securities matters, including the Securities Act of 1933, Securities Exchange Act of 1934, Investment Advisers Act of 1940, and Investment Company Act of 1940
- Experience working as an examiner, attorney, or industry specialist at a regulatory agency (SEC, CFTC), a plus
- Strong negotiation skills and ability to prepare and negotiate financial agreements (e.g., prime brokerage, trading agreements, lending, and derivatives documentation)
- Deep knowledge and understanding of the compliance and regulatory requirements around financial markets and crypto assets, including the regulation of RWA digital assets and crypto transactions and platforms, and blockchain technology matters (e.g., smart contracts and digital wallets) in the provision of financial services and products
- Product counseling experience in blockchain, crypto, and securities products, including the ability to apply laws and regulations to new products and/or technologies, and the ability to review products and related functionality for compliance with applicable laws
- Interest in digital assets, blockchain technology, and the innovations brought about by decentralized applications and DeFi
- J.D. and membership with at least one state bar
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills for both in-person and remote audiences
- Ability to own, organize, prioritize, and manage projects effectively
What the job involves
- We are looking for someone who wants to innovate at the intersection of crypto and securities. If this is you, you’ll be part of a team building Figure’s marketplaces and products
- Figure Markets has a global marketplace platform that supports issuing and trading of digital assets, securities, and non-securities, using blockchain. You’ll have experience in one or more of the following jurisdictions: Americas, Europe, Asia, Middle East. Our Legal team plays a central role in Figure Markets’ hyper-growth and the realization of our mission of leveraging blockchain to transform financial services
- Open to both in-person and remote candidates, who will report to a Senior Counsel working out of New York
- Provide leadership in legal affairs for markets and products, providing sound advice on federal and state securities, banking, and insurance laws and rules
- Provide day-to-day legal, business, and strategic advice to internal markets-focused teams, addressing challenges and offering solutions in the development and implementation of groundbreaking Real-World Asset digital tokens and related financial products and services
- Offer comprehensive legal guidance throughout the product life cycle, from conception through to launch, operation, and eventual sunset, aiding in both the construction and, when necessary, the dismantling of products
- Remain up-to-date on existing and changing relevant digital assets, blockchain, securities, and technology laws and regulations to ensure compliance therewith
- Develop and deliver both forward-looking and ad hoc guidance to the marketing and design teams regarding matters pertaining to the product lifecycle and other related initiatives
- Establish or continue to build strong and positive relationships with affiliates and other ecosystem players for effective product lifecycle
Our take
Figure is the largest non-bank provider of home equity lines of credit, disrupting the lending industry with its blockchain platform, Provenance. The platform works as a registry, ledger, and exchange; handling loans, mortgaging, private credit and private investment.
The company is one of few that offers users the option to leverage their cryptocurrency assets to get loans or mortgages. Betting heavily on the cryptocurrency market has presented both its ups and downs for Figure, but a successful IPO in 2025 suggests its position nowadays is steady.
As digital assets continue to gain mainstream acceptance, there should be ample opportunity for Figure to expand its reach in the future. The company's IPO was supported by Goldman Sachs, Jefferies and BofA Securities, and raised an impressive $787.5 million.
