Role
Who you are
- Some foundational understanding of algorithms and data structures
- Developing basic technical knowledge in observability, with some prior exposure being beneficial
- Familiarity with web services, REST, and HTTP
- Learning about containers and cloud environments, possibly with some initial experience
- Participating in testing, reliability, and monitoring practices, potentially having contributed to past projects
- Gaining knowledge in building and contributing to application development, from initial stages to maintenance, with some practical experience being advantageous
- Developing professional communication skills in technical discussions, with some experience in team environments
- Eagerness to learn and develop expertise in one or more programming languages and paradigms – our systems are written in TypeScript, Java, Golang, Rust, Python, SQL, and others, with prior coding experience in any language being valuable
What the job involves
- Data Engineering is at the heart of loveholidays' data-driven culture, building and managing our petabyte-scale data platform
- We provide self-service tooling for ingesting, transforming, and discovering data, making data a first-class citizen across the organisation
- Software Engineers at loveholidays will contribute to and develop expertise in:
- Contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of our petabyte-scale data platform
- Assisting with supplier integration systems that process data
- Participating in the development and maintenance of search and recommendation systems
- Working on components of real-time pricing systems
- Contributing to domain modeling and the implementation of booking, payment, fulfillment, and management systems
- Supporting the development of AI-powered solutions
- Helping to build and maintain modern user experiences through web and mobile applications
- As part of our tech culture we continuously improve our time to delivery, reducing errors and generally leaving things better than you found them
- Your day-to-day:
- Adoption of our engineering principles
- Building and running services at scale in the cloud
- Collaborating with engineers, designers, product managers within and outside of the team
- Implementing maintainable and well-tested solutions iteratively, keeping business impact and observability as a primary focus
- Understanding the wider context of the business and designing system architectures that meet short and long term business goals

- Final stage - consisting of discussions around three key areas

Our take
Travel, both domestic and overseas, has been a huge part of the British economy since the late 20th century. In 2019, UK residents spent £43 billion on foreign holidays - almost double the amount spent a decade before.
Despite travel companies suffering considerable reputation damage back in 2020, as they struggled to refund customers whose booked holidays were suddenly cancelled, the appeal of companies like loveholidays to holidaymakers will undoubtedly endure seeing as they make the process of booking holidays much easier.
In the nearest future, loveholidays will need to focus on maintaining its reputation, especially given the wide array of direct competitors who could steal market share. At present, however, loveholidays is still one of the fastest growing online travel agents. If it can keep up the practices which have brought it success over the past 10 years, loveholidays is still in a good position to keep its growth strong for few years to come.
