Who you are
- Zynga is looking for a server-side engineer in the Austin, Bay Area, Chicago, or Toronto areas, and more specifically, someone whose level of experience should be equivalent to a Senior Software Engineer
- We are looking for a self-driven and motivated engineer who is a strong communicator, works well as a team player, and performs well under tight deadlines
- The ideal candidate will have strong software design skills, capable of owning feature work throughout the entire development pipeline of design, architecture, development, testing, release and monitoring
- The candidate can write clean code and automated tests; can provide scalable solutions in a distributed environment; and has at least three years of experience working on mobile games or live service software
- B.Sc. in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent education / work experience
- 5+ Years industry experience as a Software Developer
- Strong working knowledge in PHP, or another Object Oriented language such as C#, Java, or C++
- Solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, and software development methodologies
- Excellent communication skills and comfort working in a hybrid environment
- Experience with Unity and C#
- Performance profiling and optimization experience
- Experience with Amazon AWS and related technologies
Desirable
- Experience with common workflow tools like source control (GIT), bug tracking (JIRA), etc
- Experience in Live Ops situations
- Experience with front end development tool sets, such as JavaScript, React, HTML
- Prior game development experience (on shipped titles or live games experience)
What the job involves
- We have a well-rounded and tight-knit, distributed team with a healthy mix of engineering skill levels, and are looking to strengthen our team in tackling a variety of challenges
- The candidate would have an opportunity to design and build core gameplay systems, and modernize legacy systems, working primarily in a PHP based technology stack
- The candidate will also have the opportunity to create web-based tools for operating the game, working with a PHP and React based technology stack
- Help to architect and develop gameplay features, working alongside client side team members
- Responsible for scoping and estimating tasks
- Dive into the internals of existing systems to extend them as-needed
- Develop and integrate new technologies & SDKs
- Help to develop tools for content creators, product managers, and live-ops managers
- Help support and triage deployments and live-ops issues using tools such as Splunk or DataDog
- Mentor other engineers in core language and software development best practices
Our take
Zynga is a games developer that rode Facebook's platform to success back in the late noughties and early 2010's. It is now one of the biggest casual game producers globally, with a presence across 175 countries and regions and over 80 million monthly active users.
Though the company hit a number of roadblocks after its initial success - such as falling stock prices, and numerous calls it was copying other games - its subsequent resurgence is proof of its staying power. It continues to use social media as a distribution channel, and boasts titles such as FarmVille, Merge Dragons! and Words With Friends.
Future success will lie in the company's continued investment in building viral games that people love. It will also need to attune to the social media waves and keep track of where users can be found, as the landscape has become more mobile. Notable recent activity includes a collaboration with BBC Earth ahead of 2024's Earth day, and grant to develop actionable push notifications that enable gameplay without entering the application.
