Company mission
To improve people’s lives with the world’s best transportation.
Role
Who you are
- Experience driving technically complex machine learning (ML) products end to end, from inception through launch, significant user adoption, and sunset; ideally, the applications are consumer-facing and involve UI interactions with users
- Experience managing a team of software engineers from a product perspective and tracking progress toward a roadmap using appropriate tools (Jira, Linear, spreadsheets, ClickUp, etc.)
- Experience with user-facing, large-scale experimentation (e.g., Optimizely, Statsig, Eppo), including concepts such as statistical power and significance
- Experience using AI agents to accelerate day-to-day execution, including understanding code, querying company data, and preparing dashboards for leadership
- Knowledge of how machine learning and AI work, including widely used machine learning and deep learning packages such as XGBoost, CatBoost, LightGBM, scikit-learn, Keras, and PyTorch, as well as the autoresearch approach
- Familiarity with crafting and leading presentations for small groups at the C-suite executive level and large teams (100+ people) at all-hands meetings in medium to large companies
- Ability to review technical specifications written by engineers and provide critical product feedback
- Ability to drive results and operate independently with little supervision in a flat-structured organization where approvals are not needed but results are closely monitored
What the job involves
- The Rider Recommendations team is an applied AI and machine learning team that personalizes real-time decisions in the Rider app, including search, ride modes, content selection and ranking, and message generation. The team works closely with the Rider App team to evolve the app for greater personalization and real-time decision-making, and acts as the orchestration layer making final decisions about what riders see
- Work closely with machine learning and AI engineers and data scientists to define objectives for the team’s models, understand the needs of Rider App stakeholder teams, and align with Lyft’s overall goals. Identify worthwhile outcomes and translate them into a single objective for applications to use end to end, considering short- and long-term trade-offs and partner-team objectives
- Define, own, and be responsible for the roadmap of applied ML and AI products across every screen of the Rider application and throughout the rider conversion funnel
- Define, track, and periodically report on team metrics and KPIs, and be directly responsible for the financial outcomes the team drives
- Define the objective function to maximize or minimize throughout the Rider app, taking into account short-term, long-term, and stakeholder-team objectives, including Loyalty, Partnership, Ads, Business, AV, Safety, and Luxury
- Work with data science to define, measure, and predict the long-term value of riders
- Identify how to cold-start launches of new regions, modes, and features to drive adoption while maintaining algorithm performance
- Work in a cross-functional team to build a unified vision for a Rider profile by identifying, collecting, and organizing rider information for ML and AI training
- Write detailed product requirements, strategy, and planning documents for technical and non-technical audiences to align product development, set delivery expectations, and create predictable outcomes for workstreams
- Design, run, and analyze experiments and ongoing evaluation systems to monitor model performance and evaluate improvements
- Present monthly updates on the team’s progress to non-technical leadership, highlighting progress and roadblocks
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialled and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app, whilst the acquisition of European competitor Freenow could add 6 million new riders to its platform in 2026.
