Who you are
- You are an effective team builder. You're no stranger to this kind of work. You have at least two years of experience managing teams of Backend Engineers. You know how to hire, train, and develop engineers from all backgrounds. You understand the benefits of building a diverse and inclusive engineering team
- You’re a product thinker. As an Engineering Manager, you’ve worked to set goals, metrics, and a strategy for a product-focused Engineering team. You push your team to prioritize impactful work to meet the company’s goals
- You can keep track of, prioritize, and lead multiple projects. We're a small team, and there's no shortage of things you could be doing in a day. You'll carve out time for functional projects and make sure they solve real problems the team faces -- ideally making development even easier
- You have excellent communication skills. You regularly work with engineers and other stakeholders from various disciplines, balancing engineering concerns, such as technical debt, with product concerns. Ideally, you find solutions that address both the team and user needs but if not, help build understanding around difficult decisions
- You are a skilled engineering leader. You've got a strong background in leading a team of Engineers working in our stack (Python, Django or React, ES6 or Node.js, etc.). Even if you aren't a daily coder, you regularly exercise your coding muscles and try to be an asset in any technical context your team may need
- You're adaptable. You've been in fast growing companies and know how to build, change, and adapt to the needs of a company as it grows

- You’ll support the Edge team in building and maintaining key infrastructure and services that power our automation platform
- Your day-to-day will involve leading with empathy, communicating with clarity, and helping your team do their best work—sustainably
- Construct and monitor: Your team will build and run our vital business services, affectionately known as 'Zaps'. Your drive for engineering excellence and scalability will ensure that these services perform optimally, powering millions of users across the globe
- Execute and Authenticate: Your technical skills and strategic judgment will be instrumental to our operations. Your team will be responsible for executing and authenticating actions within our system, ensuring our users enjoy a seamless experience
- Enable and Empower: Your and your team’s work will be crucial to the continued evolution of Zapier's core workflow product along with the broader product catalog. Collaborating with other team leaders, you'll align technological advancements with broader company objectives
- Own and Evolve: Your team’s contribution will be both meaningful and valued. You'll take ownership of business metrics and work diligently towards their development. These metrics assist our entire organization in assessing performance and steering future strategy
- Partner closely with your engineering function and peer design function and product function to create a trio that tackles user problems and solutions
- Develop effective ways to communicate, monitor, and lead your team through weekly one-on-one’s and team meetings
- Keep leadership informed of your team’s progress in ways that are transparent, approachable, and engaging
- Mentor engineers and help them grow in their careers through coaching, sponsorship, and thoughtful guidance
- Participate in code reviews, learning and spreading technical knowledge throughout Zapier -- moving knowledge to documentation where appropriate
- Occasionally dive into the code; fixing bugs, improving developer experience, smoothing edges -- sometimes even spiking out small proofs of concept
- Collaborate across various disciplines (Product Managers, Designers, Researchers) to help set technical roadmaps that will achieve business goals through engineering best practices
- Actively recruit, onboard, and train new engineers at Zapier. This might involve tweaking the skills portions of interviews, or writing better documentation

Our take
Even before remote working became the "in thing", freelancers, small business owners, and large organisations have found themselves needing more and more software platforms to serve their operations needs. As people used more software services, Zapier founders saw the need to connect the actions between these softwares and save everyone some time.
Zapier is the largest integration and automation tool for businesses. Since being founded, Zapier has grown its suite of automation offerings across almost every mainstream software service. The company is one of the most successful to come out of Y Combinator, and has also been one of the pioneers of remote working.
Zapier has so far, been able to capitalise heavily on its advantage as first entrants and has had very little actual competition. Software services aren't going anywhere anytime soon and organisations are only going to need more of them. This puts Zapier in a strong place growth-wise but also opens up room for bolder companies to get in on the action. Companies like Airtable and Integromat are already preying on more niche segments of Zapier's market share.
