Role
Who you are
- We’re looking for someone who is energized by that kind of ambiguity: who can construct a novel argument or a case theory nobody else saw, stay clear-headed when a matter is genuinely indeterminate, and write their way to a conclusion — briefs, internal memos, demand letters, whatever the moment calls for — with the kind of clarity and force that changes how people see the case
- Litigation experience
- Substantial experience managing complex litigation at a top-tier law firm or in house — including consumer class actions and government investigations — from case assessment through resolution
- Skilled at developing litigation strategy and managing outside counsel to efficient, well-reasoned outcomes
- Creativity and comfort with ambiguity
- A track record of finding creative, non-obvious solutions to hard legal problems, rather than defaulting to the conventional playbook
- Genuinely comfortable operating without a clear precedent or roadmap — able to make sound judgment calls amid incomplete facts, unsettled law, and competing pressures
- Writing and thinking, at a genuinely high level
- We hire for this specifically: the ability to write — and think — beautifully. Sentences that are clear, economical, and a pleasure to read, in service of an argument that is airtight underneath
- A habit of working out hard problems by writing through them, not just talking around them — the writing is where the thinking gets done, not just where it gets recorded afterward
- Outstanding legal writing — clear, persuasive, and fast — across audiences from opposing counsel and regulators to the Board
- Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to advise senior stakeholders and simplify complex legal concepts
- Cross-functional influence
- Proven ability to build relationships and operate effectively across a matrixed organization
- Strong track record of handling complex legal issues in a fast-paced, technology-driven company
- 10+ years of combined litigation experience at a law firm, in-house, or both
- Direct experience litigating consumer class actions and/or handling government investigations
- Distinctive litigation abilities:
- The drive to solve novel questions of first impression — problems nobody in the building, and maybe nobody yet, has answered
- The gift for breaking down complex arguments into simple, elegant narratives that persuade without ever feeling dumbed down
- The ability to chart a clear path for the business through thickets of ambiguous laws and regulations
- The instinct to find the argument, the angle, or the case theory that nobody else in the room sees
- The judgment to know which fights are worth having, and the discipline to make that call and live with it
- A reputation as an exceptional legal writer, with work product — briefs, memos, opinions — that speaks for itself and that you're proud to have us read
- Experience in high-growth technology or media companies
- J.D. from a U.S. accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing
What the job involves
- Roku is looking for an Assistant General Counsel, Litigation to join our Legal team
- This role owns Roku’s litigation portfolio outside of intellectual property matters — including consumer class actions, commercial disputes, and government investigations, with a particular focus on privacy-related litigation and related regulatory enforcement actions — across a business that spans hardware, streaming, and one of the fastest-growing advertising platforms in media
- You will manage disputes and government inquiries end-to-end, from first notice through resolution — building the strategy, directing outside counsel, and making the call on when to fight, settle, or escalate
- This role reports to the VP, Deputy General Counsel, Strategic Litigation and IP
- Own Roku’s corporate litigation portfolio outside of intellectual property — including consumer class actions, commercial and contract disputes, and privacy-related claims under laws such as the VPPA, CIPA and other wiretap-style statutes, BIPA, and CCPA — from intake and early case assessment through resolution
- Define case strategy and make recommendations on when to litigate, settle, or escalate, in partnership with the Deputy General Counsel, General Counsel, Legal teammates, and business stakeholders
- Manage government investigations and inquiries — from the FTC, state attorneys general, data protection authorities, and other regulators — spanning privacy, consumer protection, advertising, and related areas
- Coordinate cross-functional responses to regulatory matters, including with Privacy, Security, Communications, and Government Affairs
- Develop novel legal theories and creative litigation strategies for matters that don’t fit a standard playbook, and know when a conventional approach is the right call and when it isn’t
- Operate comfortably amid incomplete facts, unsettled law, and genuine uncertainty — and make sound, well-reasoned judgment calls anyway
- Write the arguments, memos, and correspondence that move a matter forward — clear, persuasive, and built to withstand scrutiny from a judge, a regulator, or Management
- Help build and scale repeatable litigation processes — intake, early case assessment, playbooks, and post-mortems — across the litigation portfolio, consistent with Roku’s broader litigation operating model
- Manage outside counsel relationships and budgets across consumer class actions, government investigations, commercial disputes, and privacy litigation, driving efficient, high-quality outcomes
- Serve as a trusted advisor to Product, Engineering, Ads, Data/Analytics, and Compliance teams on litigation and privacy risk
- Provide clear, decision-ready reporting on litigation exposure, trends, and key matters — including consumer class actions, government investigations, and privacy disputes — to the Deputy General Counsel and senior leadership
- What success looks like
- Litigation across the portfolio — consumer class actions, government investigations, and privacy disputes — is managed with clear strategy, consistency, and discipline
- Novel, first-of-their-kind legal questions get answered with original thinking, not a shrug or a borrowed answer
- Complex arguments reach decision-makers as simple, elegant narratives — never oversimplified, never impossible to follow
- The business has a clear, confident path through ambiguous laws and regulations, even where the law hasn’t caught up yet
- Roku picks its fights deliberately, and stands behind the ones it picks
- Outside counsel spend across the litigation portfolio is efficient, predictable, and aligned to outcomes
- Legal is a trusted, proactive partner to business and functional teams on litigation risk
- Leadership has clear visibility into litigation risk, exposure, and trends across the portfolio
Our take
According to Nielsen data, the average streamer spends over seven minutes searching for something to watch. Streaming services use customers' viewing history to make suggestions, but these are limited to programs licensed for that particular service.
Roku provides an integrated streaming service that offers TV channels, movies and third-party streaming services, resulting in an all-in-one streaming platform. The service can be accessed through a variety of customized subscription packages and fees.
Roku stands out in the streaming industry by bringing many competitors together in one package. The startup provides further innovative services such as a weekly TV series named 'Roku Recommends' which uses first-party data to recommend essential viewing to users.
Alongside funding filmmakers through its "Change Makers Program", Roku also acquired its own original library of shows through its acquisition of now-defunct Quibi's library. Then, after successful collaborations with TCL and Hisense, the first in-house "Roku Television" was released. In 2026, it was announced that media giant FOX would acquire Roku, which the companies say will create the third largest player in US TV by share of viewing.
