Role
Who you are
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Solid programming fundamentals in Java, Python, or another object-oriented language, with willingness to work in Java
- Familiarity with Linux and comfort in a terminal
- Curiosity about how software meets hardware: networking, radios, embedded systems, or IoT (coursework and personal projects count)
- Bias toward tinkering: you've taken something apart, built something scrappy, or debugged something the hard way
- Clear communication and eagerness to ask questions
Desirable
- Coursework or projects in embedded systems, networking, or RF communication
- Experience with AWS or any cloud platform
- A personal project involving a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, microcontroller, or home automation
- Interest in healthcare technology or building for underserved users
What the job involves
- As a Software Engineering Intern on the Edge team, you will work at the boundary between physical systems installed in senior living communities and the cloud infrastructure that powers the Sage platform
- Our edge fleet includes thousands of deployed devices: gateways, sensors, pendants and more that must run reliably in buildings we don't control, on networks we don't manage, for residents who depend on them in emergencies
- This internship runs Monday, June 7, 2027 to Friday, August 13, 2027
- You will ship production code during your internship
- You'll be paired with a senior engineer as your mentor, embed on the team, and present your work to the engineering organization at the end of the summer
- Projects may include such work as fleet diagnostic tooling, device telemetry pipelines, or automation that replaces manual operational work
- Design, build, and ship a summer project that solves a real problem for the Edge team, with guidance from your mentor
- Write backend services in Java that interact with a fleet of thousands of on-premise devices
- Work with Linux-based edge devices: flashing, configuring, debugging, and learning how software behaves when the network is unreliable
- Build tooling that improves fleet observability and helps the team remotely diagnose hardware and connectivity issues
- Participate in code reviews and design discussions alongside the full engineering team
- Learn how a production IoT system spanning LoRaWAN, BLE, and cloud services actually operates at scale
Our take
In the event of an accident or fall, elder care facilities largely rely on outdated nurse call systems, which can mean residents wait longer than necessary to receive care or attention. Sage solves this problem by providing carers and institutions with a modern operating system.
Sage's caregiver app allows carers to identify patients in need of help, as well as providing tools for triage and the reviewing of care information. As one of the first companies to bring a data-driven approach to elder care in this way, Sage has received strong attention and raised impressive funding, most recently with the acquisition of $65M.
The age-tech market is growing steadily, and becoming more competitive, which means Sage will need to invest heavily in scaling its outreach in order to consolidate its progress. That said, it has established an early foothold which gives it a place to work from as it develops into the future.
