Role
Who you are
- Excited by the flexibility of seasonal work and able to commit fully during the tax season
- Active CPA, EA, or JD in state of residency
- 3–5 years of experience preparing, signing, and filing returns, including Forms 1040 and 1120-S. Experience with additional complexities such as Form 1065 and Schedules C, E, and SE is a plus
- Experience successfully managing deadlines and a high volume of returns during tax season
- Strong technical proficiency using cloud-based applications, tax research, and preparation tools such as CCH, GoSystems, SurePrep, Google Suite, and Slack
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain technical tax matters and build trust with teammates and members
- Tech-savvy and able to quickly learn and navigate new tools
- Exposure to multi-state tax principles, such as nexus, apportionment, and state allocations, is a strong plus

- As a Seasonal Tax Compliance Manager, you’ll join Collective’s Tax team during our busiest time of year, playing a vital role as a trusted tax accountant to our members and Member Relations team
- You’ll manage a portfolio of members while partnering closely with tax leadership and junior staff to deliver an exceptional tax experience

- Understand our clients’ financial background and goals and help identify optimization opportunities
- Review, deliver, sign, and file federal and state tax returns, including Forms 1040 and 1120-S
- Consistently deliver high-quality results while upholding federal and state compliance requirements
- Support our team of tax professionals with their day-to-day tasks and continued growth
- Mentor, train, and provide feedback to junior tax staff
- Effectively manage competing priorities and deadlines during a fast-paced tax season
- Communicate updates and answers to tax questions across the organization
- Research and analyze tax laws, regulations, and policies as needed
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in tax laws and their impact on compliance requirements
- Collaborate with leadership and other departments to address complex tax-related issues
- Serve as a subject matter expert on tax matters and return completion, including 1120-S and 1040. Experience with Schedules C, E, and SE is a plus
Our take
Collective is tapping into the quickly growing freelance and self employed workforce with a back office platform which provides full support for accounting, tax, bookkeeping and other financial admin, essentially removing the burden from the business owner entirely.
Launched in 2020, Collective didn’t take long to receive major backing from General Catalyst as well as Ashton Kutcher’s VC fund Sound Ventures. It’s put it to great use too, with an employee headcount now in the hundreds, showing just how fast the startup is growing.
Interestingly, Collective isn’t available for any and all subscribers. Rather, it only allows applicants to become members if Collective’s advisors know they can offer real value. It may seem a counter-intuitive move, but it keeps the company’s success rate high.
The company's latest funding round, raised in 2023, supports the accelerated implementation of AI across its operations as well as expanded onboarding efforts. Collective also continues to broaden the value of its offering, for example wit the launch of an AI accounting platform for one-person operations.
