What the job involves
- We're looking for a head of AI to lead our research org. The job entails setting the research direction, implementing some of it, and managing/growing the research team
- We're an SF team of ~20 engineers/researchers from Harvard, MIT, Apple, etc. We recently raised a $17m Series A from Lightspeed and Nvidia, and we just bought a $5m H200 cluster to train more models
- At Exa, we're training foundational models for search. Our goal is to build systems that can instantly filter the world's knowledge to exactly what you want, no matter how complex your query. Basically, put the web into an extremely powerful database
- No other search engine can or is trying to do this (SearchGPT, Google, Perplexity are innovating on the UI, not the search algorithm). And no other AI lab is exploring this direction either
- That means if we don't find novel methods for search, they won't be found. Our team has already made breakthroughs not seen in the literature, and we have more coming. Want to explore the search frontier with us?
- Dream up a novel architecture for search in the shower, then code it up and beat our best model's top score
- Design an RLAIF pipeline for search
- Give speeches at conferences and recruit the best ML researchers
- Publish a SOTA embedding paper for the company
Our take
The way we currently query AIs means that the models we rely on are themselves reliant on the quality of internet search tools. To answer this, Exa is building a tool that allows AI models to perform the equivalent of a web search, making the models more effective in their responses to our questions.
Exa’s embeddings-based search engine is free of “hallucinations” (those bizarre search query answers that AI sometimes brings back to users). Also, in the same way that LLMs complete sentences, its predictive technology does the same for search queries by providing the next probable link.
It's an alluring product for companies and individuals who want to accelerate their research answers. It's also one of a kind at present, which has led to several successful funding rounds which will help accelerate its product. If it maintains its current momentum, Exa could well be the AI search engine of the future.
