Company mission
To help users get the most out of open-source technology, without inflated fees or lock-ins.
Role
Who you are
- The right person for this role thinks in use cases and buyer needs, not only product features
- You don’t need to come from a product marketing background. If you've done technical content, developer relations, solutions engineering, or technical writing in the database or infrastructure space, and you can translate complex technology into clear messaging, we want to hear from you
- Strong communicator. Can write for technical buyers (DBAs, SREs, platform engineers) and economic buyers (VP Eng, CTO, CISO). Clear and concise internally too
- Stakeholder skills. Builds trust across Product, Engineering, Sales, and Services. Responsive, organized, follows through
- Technical foundation. Comfortable in technical conversations about databases, infrastructure, and operations. Can learn complex technology quickly and translate it into clear messaging. Can work in, or can learn to work in GitHub. Understanding of use cases that drive these buyers: migrations, high availability, performance, cost, compliance, and AI or vector workloads
- Open source mindset. Understands transparent work, respects community, and describes licenses honestly, including when software is source-available rather than open source. Has worked in or engaged with open source in some meaningful way
- Adaptable. Willing to work across multiple database technologies when the team needs it
- 3+ years in a technical marketing, developer relations, solutions engineering, technical writing, or product marketing role. (The specific title matters less than what you've done.)
- Occasional travel (3-6 events a year) for database community conferences, partner meetings, and internal offsites (for example Percona Live, KubeCon, and MySQL or MongoDB community events)
What the job involves
- This role manages product marketing for document databases (MongoDB), MySQL, and MariaDB
- Reports to: Director of Solutions Marketing (Solutions Marketing is Percona's product marketing function)
- Percona sells support, services, and expertise alongside database software. Our software and our services combine to provide users and customers with secure open source databases, free of vendor lock-in. On this team, we help communicate the value and relevance to the people involved in deciding to use our solutions
- Initial focus (document databases like MongoDB, MySQL, and MariaDB):
- Technical product messaging and positioning for Percona’s MongoDB related offerings, MySQL, and MariaDB support and expertise
- Use case and value based messaging for all feature messaging for GTM
- Competitive positioning
- Partner with Services and Consulting so your messaging connects to the support, consulting, and managed services that customers actually buy alongside the software
- Across the portfolio (ongoing):
- Coordinate with Product on roadmap inputs for your portfolio areas. Translate VOC from support, consulting, and sales into positioning updates and product feedback
- Own launch plans for releases, features, and service offerings in your areas. Contribute to launches, enablement, and messaging that span multiple database technologies
- Build and maintain competitive landscapes for your primary areas, and contribute to the broader Percona competitive view. Track ecosystem trends across your portfolio areas (community surveys, conferences, mailing lists, analyst reports)
- Build sales and CS enablement: competitive comparison docs, pitch decks, one-pagers, FAQ docs, and other materials that connect technology to the use cases buyers care about
- Engage with the open source database community. Represent Percona's perspective at events and in public content
- Percona is fully remote with a global team. Open source is the foundation: our software is built in the open where licenses allow, our community relationships are real, and transparency is the default
- You'll partner closely with teammates covering other database technologies and have direct access to Product, Engineering, Sales, and Consulting
Our take
Open-source technology brings a range of benefits such as agility and cost-effectiveness. And this makes it a prime target for businesses to add to their tech roster. However, these businesses often find themselves forced into software or contracts they do not need, in order to gain access to those that they do.
Percona provides unbiased, open-source database expertise, providing access to the tools necessary for anyone to turn their ideas into a viable business. Founded in 2006 to support consumers and users in the open-source community, the company now supplies enterprise-class support, services and software for open-source databases, both in on-premises and cloud environments.
Crucially, Percona's solutions enable its clients to develop with their customers’ needs. Clients pay for the advice and expertise provided, rather than for the company to unlock critical software features. And the company continues to evolve its offerings, for example by supplying packages focussed on enabling AI-readiness for enterprises.
