Who you are
- You have 10+ years of applicable engineering/development experience
- You have 5+ years of leadership experience in a software engineering capacity
- You have a high-level understanding of Android development technologies, frameworks and languages
- You have demonstrated leadership in establishing code quality, software testing, and product reliability in Android development teams
- You are familiar with modern Android development tools and practices
- You have built and managed global and cohesive teams while recognizing and nurturing talent
- You create an environment where engineers feel motivated and supported
- You have demonstrated experience with:
- Aligning Android development strategies with business goals
- Creating development roadmaps
- Implementing and overseeing testing processes, test automation, continuous integration and delivery
- You have the following technology skills:
- Languages: Kotlin, Java
- Frameworks & Libraries: Experience with frameworks like Jetpack libraries
What the job involves
- As the Director of Engineering for Android Platforms, you will join an existing team that builds mobile, tablet, automotive, living room devices, and partner devices
- You will bring hands-on experience to these platforms and work with our engineers to help foster a culture of excellence in operations, engineering, and delivery
- You will lean on your engineering leadership experience to continue team development and collaboration.
- The Android development teams support millions of users across our mobile applications, tablet, automotive, and living room devices
- We collaborate with product, design, program management, video engineering, platform engineering, and service monetization to deliver a unique and enriching experience for our customer
- We embody Crunchyroll’s collaborative spirit, and work with several teams to engineer scalable solutions that can be shared across all client platforms

In recent decades, anime - encompassing Japanese, Korean, and Chinese animation 0 has transitioned from a niche interest to a formidable industry, boasting a global market worth approximately $30B. Despite this growth, distribution has historically posed challenges, with series and films often reaching overseas audiences through disparate channels, if at all. Crunchyroll emerged to address this issue by consolidating the largest collection of anime into a single streaming service.
Sony's acquisition of Crunchyroll in 2021 for $1.75B expanded the platform's reach, integrating Sony's extensive animation library into its offerings. this move also positioned Crunchyroll for heightened competition against streaming giant Netflix, known for its substantial investments in anime production and acquisition. Currently, Crunchyroll maintains an unrivaled library of anime content, boasting over 44,000 episodes that have attracted over 0M paying subscribers.
While Crunchyroll initially offered a free, ad-supported tier to its vast community, it appears poised to phase out this option, transitioning to a subscription-based model for all new series. Despite this shift, the platform has implemented a global reduction in fees to stimulate subscription uptake. The success of this strategy remains to be seen, but past experiences with companies like Hulu suggest that it may drive subscription growth and mitigate piracy
