Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of experience in product design, with a proven track record of driving growth through design initiatives
- Strong portfolio showcasing your design skills, thought process, and product impact
- Ability to lead and support a small team of designers while executing as an individual contributor
- Expertise in design and prototyping tools (e.g. Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.)
- Deep understanding of user experience design principles and methodologies, including user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing
- Experience with A/B testing, analytics, and other methods for measuring the impact of design decisions
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
What the job involves
- We are seeking an experienced Lead Product Designer to join our Product Design team and oversee buyer and seller growth
- In this role, you will leverage your extensive knowledge of design principles, user psychology, and growth strategies to improve user acquisition, engagement, and retention
- Your expertise will be essential in shaping the user experience and contributing to the overall success of our company
- What does growth look like at Whatnot? We take an unconventional approach. Rather than concentrating on small experiments, such as testing the color of buttons, we focus on making significant moves to scale and expand our business
- The Growth team is dedicated to taking bold actions that drive our success
- Design and implement innovative solutions with a focus on growth initiatives, including user acquisition, activation, retention and resurrection
- Support, lead and mentor designers
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including Product Management, Engineering, and Marketing, to identify opportunities and integrate growth-focused design strategies into our products
- Conduct extensive research and data analysis to understand user behaviors, needs, and barriers to growth
- Develop and iterate on designs and prototypes that effectively communicate design ideas
- Utilize A/B testing and other quantitative and qualitative methods to validate designs and hypotheses, making data-driven decisions to improve product performance
- Advocate for best practices in design, usability, and accessibility, ensuring a consistent and user-centric approach across all product touchpoints
- Contribute to the development of our design culture and processes
Our take
The collectible toy market is large, and Whatnot has built a unique social platform that enables sellers to use livestreams to showcase their products and reach more buyers. The company’s focus is on collectible toys, some of which are rare and can cost thousands of dollars, and has also expanded to sports cards.
The idea of Whatnot was led by buyer trends. Instagram's live feature became a popular place for selling toys and trading cards, but of course was not set up to facilitate bidding or handling payments after a sale occurs. Whatnot combines live showcasing with follow-up sale capabilities, thus serving the community in a more novel way than established collectibles market players such as eBay.
The company has grown fast. It was established in 2019 and has already expanded from its original category - Funko Pop figurines - to Pokemon cards, pins, sports cards, and many more. There is still plenty of scope for expanding into new categories, as the company aims to establish itself as the go-to for this large niche, which will be facilitated by the strong levels of funding that Whatnot has raised.
