What the job involves
- Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the brightest, most interesting, and most creative people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform
- The terms of our culture should not be set by gate-keeping legacy media or chaos-fueling social media, but by the people who make and participate in that culture. Substack’s model, based on direct subscriptions, has fueled an explosion of independent publishing. It empowers creators with economic autonomy, creative ownership, and a direct connection to their most engaged audiences
- The mission of the Product Analytics team at Substack is to help the product team make better decisions. Product Analytics is embedded in the Product organization. We are a small and scrappy team that covers a lot of ground. You would be joining as the fourth individual on the team
- Take ownership of continuously improving our understanding of the product, user base, growth trajectory, and state of play
- Proactively partner with PMs and company leadership to inform the long term, medium term, and short term strategy of your product area
- Help the team define useful metrics and set clear goals
- Share regular insightful updates with your team and across the company
- Proactively partner with engineers to invest in clean and thorough logging, ETL, and improving the ergonomics of our data
Our take
Substack is an online platform for journalists and writers to manage subscription-based newsletters. It has attracted a range of users who wish to connect with their audiences in a different way to social media or ad-based models, and boasts more than 35 million subscribers.
For an industry that has seen a steady decline in its fortunes since the rise of digital, Substack is a breath of fresh air. It allows journalists to avoid the clickbait-heavy models that have dominated the last decade, and provides more freedom than its competitors. Users produce their newsletters on the site for free, charging an optional subscription fee of which Substack takes 10%.
The company continues to seek out ways to diversify its offerings, whilst securing funding rounds to expand its reach. It has also taken an outspoken approach to the AI-generated content that is taking over the internet. It already provides its users access to an AI-detection tool, and is exploring other features such as enabling users to opt out of seeing AI-generated content on their feeds altogether.
