Who you are
- Are you motivated by building products that align with broader business strategies, especially when tackling complex problems like optimizing retrieval models to balance relevance and engagement in listings?
- How do you approach improving listing retrieval to ensure that surfaced results meet both business goals and user intent? If so, this could be the perfect match
- ML expertise: Proven track record (3+ years) of building and optimizing ML-powered products, particularly in recommendations, search, or similar domains. Familiarity with retrieval systems, ranking algorithms, retrieval systems and LLMs is a plus
- Strong bias for action and impact: A proactive demeanor with a passion for creative problem solving. Comfortable navigating ambiguity while maintaining focus on delivering results
- You are deeply customer focused and connect customer needs to business outcomes when finding opportunities for the team
- Experimentation proficiency: Strong foundation in A/B testing, including hypothesis formulation, results analysis and iteration to achieve measurable outcomes
- You have worked with Machine Learning engineers to prioritize, build, evaluate, and launch ML driven product solutions that address customer needs and deliver business impact

What the job involves
- We are looking for a Senior Product Manager to lead our Search Retrieval team
- You’ll partner with a dedicated cross-functional team including product, engineering, applied science, analytics, and research
- You’ll develop and deliver a customer-centric product strategy that ensures we deliver the best and relevant search experience for our buyers
- Use hybrid, lexical, and neural retrieval models to improve search relevance while also considering cross-border trades, nuances on different markets and query understanding
- Power Etsy’s Visual Search experience and meet buyer experience through improvements in multi-modal embeddings
- Work closely with ML engineers, backend engineers, scientists, and product managers to develop & test large scale experiments to improve relevance
- Ensure ML models meet buyer standards, latency SLAs at the scale of Etsy production traffic and launch live A/B experiments to test our hypotheses
- Lead product execution and roadmap definition for the team. How can we ensure that we deliver the best candidate set out of billions of potential listing variations?
- Collaborate across functions (Analytics, Design, Engineering, Research) to identify, prioritize, define, and execute on the right areas that will improve outcomes for customers and drive business impact for Etsy
- Contribute to team culture, health, and team success by identifying, advocating for, and taking action on areas of improvement
- Analyze product performance metrics, gather user feedback, and champion improvements to enhance buyer experience and product effectiveness
- Stay informed of groundbreaking ML techniques and opportunities to expand and grow Etsy's Search Retrieval business impact. Influence the development of a unified scalable platform to deliver consistent and compelling experiences

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
