- Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams, including developers, designers, marketing, and sales teams
- Master negotiator and communicator, must be able to influence people without managing them, ask questions, listen, and resolve differences of opinion
- Ability to work closely with engineers and understand technical concepts related to the product
- Experience operating in an agile development environment and software development practices for native iOS and Android mobile applications
- Knowledge of software development processes and its relationship with hardware is important for bridging communication between technical and non-technical teams
- Ability to translate technical nuances to marketing required to create effective creative to communicate the messaging across multiple channels
- Experience using Jira and Confluence for product specification development and ongoing operations
- Strong ability to analyze market trends, competition, and customer needs
- Experience in conducting market research, user testing, and gathering insights to inform product decisions
- Strong analytical abilities to make data-driven decisions
- Experience with KPIs and metrics for tracking product performance
- Excellent project management skills to prioritize features, track milestones, and ensure timely delivery
- Strong decision-making capabilities and an understanding of when to make trade-offs between scope, time, and resources
- Strong understanding of financials, including budgeting, forecasting, and pricing strategies
- Ability to build business cases, develop pricing strategies, and evaluate product profitability
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, or other related field
- 7+ years of product experience in the tech industry related to mobile application software development, project management. Must have a product and technology background
- Excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills
- Strong strategic thinking skills, with the ability to develop and execute on product plans
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to analyze data and metrics to make informed decisions
What the job involves
- As the Principal Product Manager, Residential Products, you are responsible for the overall success of the Plume residential product line
- You are the lead evangelist within Plume and will orchestrate a close partnership with every part of the business to get the product successfully brought to market
- The Principal Product Manager uses market insights and data to translate the voice of the customer into product specifications that define how the product will work, how it will be differentiated from competitive products, how it will be sold and supported, how it supports company objectives, and most importantly define the messaging on why customers will want to want the product
- Specify what the product should do, the roadmap for where it will go over time, the investment required to get there, and the expected outcomes that align to company goals (plan, organize, execute)
- Develop business plan in partnership with finance to confirm the market opportunity and expected financial performance (Framework for Product P&L)
- Prioritize features and requirements based on customer feedback, market research, and business goals
- Conduct ongoing market analysis to identify opportunities, assess competition, and understand customer behavior
- Use data and insights to inform product decisions and validate the product direction
- Own the entire product lifecycle, from ideation and development to launch, continuous improvement, and sunsetting
- Work closely with engineering teams to define detailed product requirements and prioritize development efforts
- Be the voice of the customer by collecting and analyzing feedback to identify pain points and opportunities for improvement
- Ensure that the product meets user needs and enhances customer satisfaction
- Works closely with customer support to create required knowledge base, take in customer request and complaints, and fix problems
- Work with marketing to create the product messaging and explain why customers will care about the product
- Work with marketing and sales teams to develop and execute a go-to-market strategy for new product launches or updates
- Work with PR to address public perceptions and act as a spokesperson and subject matter expert
- Continuously monitor product performance, using KPIs such as revenue, user engagement, customer satisfaction, and retention rates
- Use insights to drive product improvements and inform future development cycles
- Communicate product progress, challenges, and future plans with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring transparency and alignment
- Present updates to leadership and adapt product direction based on feedback
- Manage product development budgets, ensuring projects are delivered within scope and cost constraints
- Collaborate with finance teams to ensure product profitability and alignment with company goals
- Serves as Voice of the Customer within Plume, make sure the customer needs and expectations are always at the center of every decision made for the product
- Product subject matter expert means knowing how to motivate and engage the broader team; not doing everything themselves or try to be the expert in all areas (leader not owner mentality)
- Empowers the broader team, helps everyone understand the context of what the customer needs, and work together to make the right choices
- Excellent communication and presentation skills to articulate product vision and strategy to stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Comfortable with the accountability of the outcomes
- Owns the issues, works with the team to solve them, focus on overcoming difficulty, positive outcomes and results
- Operates transparently and in plain view, demonstrates a focus on continuous improvement to delight customers
- A deep understanding of the customer’s needs and pain points, ensuring that product solutions address these effectively
- Empathy for user experience and a strong commitment to improving product usability
Our take
Smart devices within the home have become the norm, but Plume Design believes that this influx of revolutionary home tech is only as smart as the networks that support them. With many issues concerning smart devices, treatment is reliant on generic WiFi, unsafe networks, and expensive analysis. Plume Design remedies this with cloud-controlled internet platforms that are defined by the needs of the devices that use them.
With home office setups now the norm, Plume has fast become a necessary service for many small businesses and casual users. Its smart Wi-Fi networks are ground-level products upon which Plume offers more smart home services and it now has more than a billion devices on its network.
With substantial funding behind it, Plume’s post-COVID surge in business was one thing, but keeping up the momentum throughout the 2020s is quite another. Time will tell if the company can continue on its upward trajectory. But as long as it keeps its networks fresh (as it did in 2022 through its partnership with opensync software agent SamKnows), it shouldn’t have a problem as it scales up.
